Eagles soar past Britney to top of charts

In an unusual development on the pop album charts, veteran rock band the Eagles were awarded the No. 1 spot on Tuesday after a last-minute rule change relegated Britney Spears to second place.

The Eagles' first studio release in 28 years, "Long Road Out of Eden," sold about 711,000 copies last week, according to preliminary data released by tracking firm Nielsen SoundScan. Spears sold a modest 290,000 copies of her album, "Blackout."

In a normal world, the Eagles would be No. 1 and Spears No. 2, but the Eagles album was available only through Wal-Mart Stores Inc., which traditionally does not report data to SoundScan. Additionally, trade publication Billboard does not allow such exclusive releases to appear on its flagship Billboard 200 chart, which is compiled from SoundScan data.

That meant Spears would have been No. 1 upon the release of final SoundScan figures on Wednesday morning. However, Billboard said late Tuesday that it had changed its rule and the Eagles would indeed be No. 1. The rule was imposed at the request of retailers and labels shortly after Billboard started using SoundScan data in 1991.

"We know that some retailers will be uncomfortable with this policy, but it was inevitable that Billboard's charts would ultimately widen the parameters to reflect changes that are unfolding in music distribution," said Geoff Mayfield, Billboard's director of charts.

He said Billboard had become aware only within the last 24 hours that Wal-Mart would be willing to share the sales data for the Eagles album with Nielsen SoundScan. A Wal-Mart spokeswoman was not available for comment.

The retailer had said earlier in the day that the Eagles album generated the largest first-week sales of any music product at the company in two years

She earns more: Britney ordered to pay K-Fed's legal costs

POP singer Britney Spears, who is fighting former husband Kevin Federline for custody of their two children, has been told to pay his legal fees because she earns more money.

Superior Court Commissioner Scott M Gordon ordered Spears pay the $US120,000 ($A129,779) Federline owes his lawyer, because he "indicates that he does not earn any income".

A former back-up dancer and rap hopeful, Federline has custody of two-year-old Sean Preston and one-year-old Jayden James after an earlier court ruling.

The $US20,000 a month spousal support Spears pays Federline is set to end on November 15.

She also pays $US15,000 a month in child support.

Spears, who shot to fame in 1999, has been plagued by drug rumours but her first album in four years has been hailed by critics.

Britney Spears Runs Over Officer's Foot, Has the Hots for Kim Kardashian

People with feet, beware! Britney Spears has your number. The second victim of her driving antics is a police officer, who was run over earlier today when the pop star was leaving the L.A. County court house after one of her many custody hearings. The LAPD is has subsequently started an investigation into the incident after a "traffic collision complaint" was submitted to the Sheriff's Department in response to Britney running over the foot of a L.A. County Sheriff Deputy, reports TMZ. This, of course, comes just weeks after Britney ran over her first foot--one attached to the leg of a photographer. And now, it seems she'd like to run over the foot of Kim Kardashian. OK, not really, but that was my attempt to segue into a rumor that Britney's looking to hook up with the raven-haired socialite by using a nonsensical euphemism for sex. Reportedly, Britney revealed her desire to engage in a lesbian love affair with Kardashian during a game of what I'm guessing was probably Truth or Dare. This is what Britney is rumored to have said:

"I really love Kim's butt, skin and hair. Kim is a real woman. She is a real horny beast."

And then someone dared Britney to run over a cop's foot. And she did.

Britney Spears is Elvis

Britney Spears is in fact Elvis seems to be the thrust of this piece today.

It is 1977. On stage, the performer in the tight spangly outfit is barely recognisable: doped up, spaced out, the once sleek physique swollen and spread, the singing slurred and unintelligible. The audience is aghast yet mesmerised. These are the dying days of Elvis Presley. Skip forward 30 years, and Britney Spears appears at the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards to unveil her new single, Gimme More. The response is not good: "Spears was stuffed into a spangled bra and hotpants," jeers the New York Post, "and jiggled like Jell-O as she sleepwalked through the song."

Hmm, I think we can tell how this comparison between Britney and Elvis is going to turn out, can't we?

The similarities between the lives of Britney and Elvis, two of the most successful acts in the history of pop music, are striking. Born in Mississippi more than 45 years apart, their lives have followed a similar course, encompassing not only No 1 singles, Grammys, wealth and fame, but substance abuse, divorce and a dubious attraction to Las Vegas. Last week, Spears launched her new album, Blackout, to critical applause, but after a year of increasingly unpredictable behaviour, failed rehab stints, attacks on the paparazzi and an ongoing child custody battle, it remains to be seen whether the Princess of Pop can navigate the immense celebrity - and attendant excesses - that destroyed the King.

It's that both Britney and Elvis were/are fat, drugged and divorced. I'm sure there needs to be a little bit more to it than that though. Otherwise we'd all be expecting to hear that Don Simpson died in his bathroom too. Oh, he did you say? Well, better watch out for that porcelain then Britney!

Britney Spears 'Laughs At' Missed Birth Control Pills, Say Pals

Singer Britney Spears sparingly took birth control tablets because they made her gain weight, according to reports.

The Toxic singer - who reportedly suffered a miscarriage at the beginning of the year (07) - was receiving Depo Provera injections, but switched to tablets after piling on the pounds.

But Spears continues to forget to take the contraceptives, leaving her vulnerable to pregnancy.

A source tells website Life Style Extra, "She's constantly forgetting where she put them. She seems to find it amusing - she laughs at how scattered she is.

"She seems to think that just because she isn't in a formal relationship, that she's somehow immune to getting pregnant."

Stop the presses: Good news for Britney

Britney Spears (Jive Records)

Just when it seemed safe to write off Britney Spears as a punch line only capable of entertaining people through tabloid escapades, she goes and gets all musically relevant on us. "Blackout," her first studio album in four years, is not only a very good album, it's her best work ever - a triumph, with not a bad song to be found on the 12 tracks.

Granted, a Spears rave should be put in its proper context - it's not like we're talking Bob Dylan here. Spears is a lightweight singer who only flourishes when she has great songs and great producers to supplement her minimal vocal talent.

But when she has that help, she's fierce. And she gets that boost on every track on "Blackout," a sizzling, well-crafted, electro-pop dancefest that should return her to pop's elite.

It seems amazing that this walking disaster even found her way to a recording studio, let alone did anything of value while in it. But Spears emerges on "Blackout" as the antithesis of her tabloid persona - confident, sensual, and in control.

"I got my eye on you," she coos on one of the album's best tracks, "Radar," a sexy techno groove that you can't help but bounce to - a feeling that permeates all of "Blackout's" tracks. You won't find any saccharine ballads or fluffy pop on this disc - it's all about generating heat on the dance floor.

No, Spears hasn't completely lost it, and yes, her career has a flicker of fire left - actually much more. - Nekesa Mumbi Moody, The Associated Press

Britney loves Kim Kardashian's 'butt, skin and hair'

London, Nov 3 : Britney Spears admits that she has a crush on Playboy model Kim Kardashian.

Apparently, the troubled pop star had admitted her pining desire while playing a game of a tell-all with her friends.

"I really love Kim's butt, skin and hair," The Sun quoted her, as telling her pals.

"Kim is a real women. A real horny beast," she said.

Kardashian, who currently posed naked for Playboy, is one of the biggest stars in the US.

Britney Spears claims she was tricked into divorcing K-Fed

London, Nov 4 : Pop star Britney Spears has claimed that she was tricked into the divorce that led to her bitter custody battle with ex-husband Kevin Federline.

The 25-year-old singer is convinced that Federline planned an argument at a Manhattan hotel last year which ended in their separation and the fight over their sons, Sean, two, and Jayden, 14 months.

The astounding revelations, in the new issue of the American magazine US Weekly, are expected to be used by Britney's legal team to try to refute K-Fed's attempt to portray the 25-year-old star as a permanently wicked and bad mother.

The magazine claims that Federline was jealous of his wife's stardom, which he feared drew attention away from his faltering attempts to launch a hip-hop career.

He allegedly took advantage of her unpredictable temper after the pair had a Halloween 2006 argument.

According Spears' pal Kalie Machado, Federline's behaviour plunged the 'Toxic singer' into a breakdown, during which she desperately begged him to take her back.

"Spears asked 'Why did he do this to me?' She felt so unwanted, and she's already so insecure," the Daily Mail quoted Machado, as saying.

"It just made her crazy and depressed.

"In the beginning, she really wanted to get back together. She wanted so badly to have the father of her babies. Britney was calling Kevin five days in a row nonstop.

"She would look at Sean and Jayden and say, 'Where's your daddy? I need help. Where's your daddy,'" Machado added.

Foot fetish? Britney may have run over cop's foot

Britney Spears is under investigation for possible complicity in an incident in which a sheriff's deputy's foot was injured as she was leaving a downtown courthouse last week, the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed Friday.

"We are aware that Britney Spears was leaving the courthouse," said Officer Jason Lee, a police spokesman. "We are also aware that a deputy was injured, but we're unable to confirm the details on the deputy's injury because the investigation is in its initial stage."

Celebrity website TMZ.com reported authorities are looking into whether Spears ran over the deputy's foot with her car as she was leaving an Oct. 26 hearing on her efforts to obtain joint custody of her two children with ex-husband Kevin Federline.

Officer Ana Aguirre would only say that a deputy suffered "minor to moderate" injuries in an accident involving a vehicle.

Spears under Investigation After Running Over Cops Foot

BRITNEY SPEARS is under investigation after she ran over a Los Angeles County Sheriff deputy's foot in her Mercedes Benz. Days after the Toxic troublemaker accidentally drove over a photographer's foot, Spears floored officer Stanley Mosk as she exited Los Angeles County Court following her custody hearing last week (26Oct07). Sheriff's Department officials have filed a traffic collision complaint and now the LAPD is conducting an "active investigation" into the mishap, according to TMZ.com. Mosk has been hobbling around court on crutches since the accident, and his superiors have been forced to reassign him to light duty. A police source reveals officials are looking at the incident with a view to filing another hit and run charge against Spears. The pop star narrowly escaped a hit and run conviction last month (Oct07) after agreeing to settle an August (07) parking lot accident out of court.

Lance Bass Jokes About Marriage; Visits Britney

Lance Bass has retracted a shocking revelation he once married a girlfriend for free alcohol, insisting it was "just a joke."

The former *NSYNC singer - who is openly gay - confessed to a quickie wedding in Las Vegas in "1999 or 2000" with a girl who was "just a friend" - but their attempts to get free booze failed miserably.

However, Bass' publicist Ken Sunshine admits the star's claims are false.

He says, "By saying he was married in Vegas, it was a way to get free drinks. He never really got married. That's why there's no record of it."

And although Lance was joking about getting hitched, his relationship with troubled star Britney Spears is no laughing matter.

The 28-year-old Broadway star told People magazine that he hung out with Spears Thursday night.

"I went over to the house. It was great," he said.

"I went over to see the kids, and you can tell she's really trying so hard to get herself back in order."

And he has some simple advice for the mother of two.

"Just be yourself" he says, "and remember where you came from."

Britney Spears Careless With Birth Control?

Singer Britney Spears sparingly took birth control tablets because they made her gain weight, according to reports. The singer - who reportedly suffered a miscarriage at the beginning of the year - was receiving Depo Provera injections, but switched to tablets after piling on the pounds.

Spears' former assistant wants her to seek mental help

London, Nov 1 - Kalie Marchado, former assistant to pop singer Britney Spears, wants her to seek 'mental help'.

Marchado worked for Spears for three months from January and says she was shocked by Spears' strange behaviour after she split from Kevin Federline.

Contactmusic.com quotes Marchado as saying: 'She's very, very nice, but she has crazy thoughts always going through her head. I never saw her do drugs. I never saw her take prescription medicine - but she needed it. She needs mental help.'

Studio system might not have saved Lohan and Co

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - In the wake of the implosion of such media darlings as Lindsay Lohan, Britney Spears and Paris Hilton, a number of commentators have bemoaned the passing of the old studio system that protected stars from themselves.

"These are women who are clearly out of control because the studio system is over," opined cultural critic Camille Paglia in an US Weekly interview. "The studio system guided and shaped the careers of the young women who it signed up. It maximized their sexual allure by dealing it out in small doses and making sure you don't have -- what it has become here -- a situation of anarchy."

Yes, that might be what the studio system, in its heyday in the 1930s and '40s, tried to do, but as author Jeanine Basinger demonstrates in her newly published "The Star Machine," not even a powerful studio like the old MGM could protect a really wayward actress.

Basinger describes the way the star system was supposed to work: the talent searches, the screen tests, the physical makeover, the invention of new names and biographies, the slow buildup through publicity shots and column items, the screen debuts in supporting parts -- all leading to the creation of a full-fledged movie star.

But sometimes, despite the studios' best efforts, a star undercut the system. As a case in point, Basinger points to Lana Turner.

Today, Turner's story is inevitably linked with the notorious killing of her lover Johnny Stompanato, knifed to death by the actress' daughter Cheryl Crane in 1958. But Turner's offscreen adventures had damaged her career well before that.

Discovered as a teenager, Turner compliantly turned herself over to the studio system. Her very discovery by The Hollywood Reporter founder Billy Wilkerson instantly passed into legend: Wilkerson was said to have spotted her sipping a soda at Schwab's Drug Store, though the actual site has long been debated, and Basinger opts for Currie's Candy and Cigar Store.

A natural screen presence even though she had no training as an actress, Turner found a mentor in producer-director Mervyn LeRoy, who eventually would take her with him to MGM, which became her home studio. Born Julie Jean Mildred Frances Turner, she was allowed to keep her last name once she adopted Lana as her new moniker. Turning her into a young, sexy ingenue was more a matter of grooming and costuming than the more extreme makeovers given some starlets.

But her offscreen adventures soon threatened to define her image. At 20, she eloped with bandleader Artie Shaw, but the marriage lasted just four months. (Shades of Britney!) Becoming a fixture at Hollywood nightspots, she became known as "queen of the nightclubs." (Shades of Paris!) Caught up in an affair with the equally glamorous Tyrone Power -- they were the Brad and Angelina of their day -- she made headlines when she skipped the set of "Green Dolphin Street," forcing the production to shut down, to spend a weekend with the actor. (Shades of Lindsay!)

The media of Turner's day might not have been instantaneous, but the fan mags and the newsreels were relentless in reporting her misadventures. Writes Basinger, "Since MGM couldn't control her or her bad publicity -- and since the public obviously ate it up and wanted more of her -- the studio just let it happen."

As a result, her roles grew more limited. More and more, she was cast as the bad girl; then the glamorous movie star, essentially playing herself; then, particularly after the Stompanato slaying, the troubled mom. "The little girl who was a fizzy vanilla soda," Basinger sums up, "became a champagne cocktail and then a frozen daiquiri."

Posh Spice: 'We're Too Boring for the Paparazzi'

VICTORIA BECKHAM has publicly thanked BRITNEY SPEARS for diverting Los Angeles' paparazzi gangs away from her and her family.
The Spice Girls star admits she feared for her children's safety when she first arrived in the city, where her husband David plays for the L.A. Galaxy soccer team - because photographers were "so intense".
But she claims the fact they are too dull and Spears is a real headline maker may have helped them avoid the snappers.
She says, "They (photographers) kind of figured out that actually we're quite boring and Britney's far more interesting, and so they go to her house.
"We're not out at nightclubs every night. We're a bit boring for them I think."

Britney Spears set to top charts in Eagles potential absence

Britney Spears is set to top the Billboard 200 and Top Comprehensive albums this week, despite potentially higher sales by the Eagles first album in 27 years: Long Road Out of Eden. Sales of Britney's Blackout sat at 124,000 copies yesterday according to Billboard and the album is expected to sale about 200,000 - 250,000 more before the end of the charting week. In 2003, Britney's In the Zone album sold over 600,000 copies in its debut week, which means with the projected figures, her album sales are still not as high as hoped. Unfortunately, that is a trend common for all album releases since 2003.

On the other side, the Eagles new album, which is being sold exclusively in Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (NYSE: WMT) stores and on the band's official website, is reported to potentially outsell Blackout if Wal-Mart decides to report the sales. Even if Wal-Mart were to decide to report sales, the Eagles new album would only be eligible for the Top Comprehensive Albums chart. Billboard notes "titles that are not generally available at retail are not eligible to appear on The Billboard 200, but are entitled to chart on Billboard's Top Comprehensive Albums, which includes catalog titles and proprietary albums from retailers willing to report those sales."

It's a shame that the first new album in 27 years by the Eagles will potentially not become a "number one," but at the same time it is not surprising to read that the band is enjoying heavy sales of their album. In 1994, their live album Hell Freezes Over topped the Billboard 200 for two weeks. At the same time, you cannot blame the band for choosing to make an exclusive deal with Wal-Mart, especially given the chain's status as number one music retailer, and the history the company has with exclusive and limited album releases.

Britney Spears Cried Over Wedding Dress, Kevin Federline Photos

Britney Spears kept her wedding dress on display months after the break-down of her marriage to Kevin Federline, according to her former assistant.

The troubled singer was also caught "bawling" over framed photographs of her ex-husband around her Malibu home, according to her former personal assistant Kalie Machado.

Machado, 23, who worked with Spears, 25, for three months from last December (06), also reveals Spears and Federline would regularly row in front of their children Sean Preston, two, and Jayden James, one.

She tells Us magazine, "She wanted so badly to have the father of her babies. When Britney thought about Kevin not wanting her, she would bawl.

"She would look at Sean and Jayden and say, 'Where's your daddy? I need help. Where's your daddy?

"She would ask, 'Why did he do this to me?' It just made her crazy and depressed."

Tabloid Hell: it's Britney vs the Catholic Church

Child custody shenanigans, Lazarus-like musical comebacks and now religious controversy.

Yes, today's (October 31) Britney Spears drama comes courtesy of the Roman Catholic Church.

On the inside sleeve of her new album 'Blackout', the be-wigged one is seen sitting on a priest's lap in a confession booth while wearing fishnet stockings.

All very 'Carry On Vicar' you might think, but the Catholic League have got their, erm, knickers in a twist nevertheless.

Kiera McCaffrey, the director of the Catholic League, said: "She should be focusing on singing and dancing and trying to be an entertainer without mocking a Catholic sacrament.

"What would be great is if she got serious about her religious faith and instead of mocking the confessional maybe she could visit one for its intended purpose."

Indeed. If she does go we can definitely conclude that they've started putting Cheetos in the holy water fountains.
